How will we work tomorrow?

Today's working life is characterised by a major change. Experts expect that in many sectors of the economy, jobs will no longer be done by people in the future. At the same time, demanding new jobs are being created - and other sectors of the economy are expanding.

The growth sectors of the future

Although digitalisation is also making its way into many social sectors, it is not reducing the demand for human labour here. The demand for medical and nursing professionals is continuously increasing. The same is true for educators, teachers and social workers. This is particularly true in Germany because of demographic developments and the increasing all-day care of children. Figures from the employment agency show a significant increase in these jobs: For example, in 2014, around 490,000 people were employed in elderly care subject to social insurance contributions; in 2018, this number rose to around 583,000. In order for workers to switch from other professions and decide to work in this way, an improvement in image and pay is urgently needed. Politicians have also recognised this fact and initiated the Concerted Action on Care.

Work with meaning

There is good news: The number of jobs that workers enjoy is increasing. Companies are responding to the justified demand of employees to do meaningful work. According to a 2018 study commissioned by the Harvard Business Review, 90 per cent of US employees would be willing to give up almost a quarter of their salary if their occupation were more meaningful. In addition, digitalisation is leading to robots taking over monotonous and stressful jobs like trading in mt4 in the future. This allows you to devote yourself to tasks that are exciting, varied and, above all, meaningful.

Autonomy makes you happy

The increasing flexibilisation of working hours opens up the possibility of shaping one's own life in a more self-determined way than before. This starts with the rhythm of the day and night: flexitime already allows an increasing number of employees to decide freely when they want to start their working day. In the same way, you decide whether to extend or reduce your working hours according to your personal performance and willingness. Innovative collective agreements already show how important self-determination at work is. One example is the agreement that Deutsche Bahn has reached with the trade unions. They offer more time off as an alternative to salary increases. A large proportion of workers opt for fewer working hours.

Autonomy in terms of content is also becoming more important: some companies are opening up the freedom for employees to shape the content of their work. This can mean a change of department, but also the voluntary relinquishment of management responsibility. The aim is to give employees as much flexibility as possible.
