Don Jazzy

Nigerian song producer Michael Collins Ajereh, better known by his stage name Don Jazzy, was born on November 26, 1982. He founded Mavin Records and serves as its CEO. Along with D'banj, Don Jazzy shared ownership of the now-defunct Mo' Hits Records record company.

 

Early Life and education

Don Jazzy, the son of Collins Enebeli Ajereh and Mrs. Ajereh, was born Michael Collins Ajereh in Umuahia, Abia State, on November 26, 1982. His father is from Isoko in Delta State.His father is an Isoko and his mother is an Igbo princess from the state of Abia.

Don Jazzy was raised in Ajegunle, Lagos, by Ajereh's family. He received his education at Federal Government College Lagos, a coeducational high school. 

At a young age, Don Jazzy developed a passion for music, and at the age of 12, he started learning to play the piano and bass guitar. Additionally, he learned about folk and percussion instruments. Don Jazzy went to Ekpoma, Edo State, to go to Ambrose Alli University to study business management.

His first trip to London was in 2000, when Jazzy's uncle asked him to perform the drums for a nearby church there. Don Jazzy was hired as a security guard at McDonald's. He maintained his musical interest by spending time with D'Banj, Solek, JJC Skillz, Kas, Jesse Jagz, and The 419 Squad.

 

Personal Life

In 2003, Don Jazzy wed Michelle Jackson. He asserts that they split up approximately two years after being married because of problems that they both experienced as a result of his ambition. But he has no immediate plans to be married again out of concern that his devotion to and love for music would offend someone once more.

Ajereh is the younger brother of D'Prince.

He shared the news of his mother's passing on Instagram in July 2022.

 

Career

Together with D'Banj, Don Jazzy founded Mo' Hits Records in 2004. Don Jazzy produced the albums No Long Thing and Rundown/Funk You Up during the course of the next two years. Around this time, Don Jazzy started using the phrase "It's Don Jazzy Again!" as his signature introduction.

In 2008, Don Jazzy received credit for helping D'Banj produce The Entertainer. He also helped with the creation of Mushin 2 MoHits by Wande Coal, which has been hailed as one of the greatest albums to ever come out of Nigeria.

Despite not claiming to be a vocalist, Don Jazzy provided backup vocals for the musicians he produced. These performances include vocals from Jay-Z, Dr. SID, Ikechukwu, Kween, Sauce Kid, D'Banj, and Sauce Kid.

Kanye West hired Don Jazzy to work as a producer at Very Good Beatz in 2011. Lift Off, which Beyoncé performs on the album Watch The Throne, was produced by Don Jazzy in collaboration with Jay-Z and Kanye West and was made available on August 8, 2011, as part of the album.

In March 2012, Don Jazzy and D'Banj said they were breaking up because they had different ideas about how to make music.

Don Jazzy announced the launch of Mavin Records on May 7, 2012. In the shortest amount of time, he predicted, Mavin Records will become the music industry's powerhouse in Africa. He released an album on May 8, 2012, featuring the performers on his label. Amarachi, Forever, Oma Ga, Take Banana and Chocolate, YOLO, and the anthem I'm a MAVIN were among the tracks on the album. Tiwa Savage was signed by Mavin Records as a vocalist. Don Jazzy made the "Marvin League" social media platform to help his label and get the word out about it.

Ajereh and artist Wande Coal had a fight on November 5, 2013, and Coal departed the label two days later.

In September 2014, Ajereh worked with Reekado Banks and Di'Ja to make the Nigerian social activist song Arise.

Ajereh and Olamide had a disagreement at the 2015 Headies Awards. The winner of the "Next Rated" award was a topic of contention between the two. Reekado Banks, an artist for Ajereh, defeated Lil Kesh of YBNL Records. The grand prize winner received a vehicle. Afterward, both parties posted regrets.

Reekado Banks left the Mavin Records label, but Don Jazzy insisted that he was still a member of the family and wished him the best of luck in his future endeavors. He also thanked him for his time with Mavin Records.

He signed Rema in 2019 before bringing on Ayra Starr to his record label in 2020. He revealed Magixx as a new artist in 2021.

 

Film Appearance

Don Jazzy made an appearance in Moses Inwang's 2012 Nollywood film The Last 3 Digits. Inwang also cast Ali Baba, A.Y., Nonso Diobi, and Dr. SID as characters.
